When pop superstar Jay Chou (周杰伦) was growing up, his teachers didn’t think he was very bright. Jay had difficulty in subjects like math and science, and he never did his homework.
Although he may not be book smart, Jay has proven that he’s not stupid. This uninterested student has exhibited talent in an area outside the classroom. He’s musically brilliant. In recent years, Jay has taken over the Asian pop scene with his unique musical style. Both fans and critics agree: when it comes to music, Jay dominates.
Jay Chou was born on January 18, 1979, in Taipei, Taiwan. Jay was always shy and quiet. But even as an infant, he came alive every time he heard music. So when Jay was just 4 years old, his parents enrolled him in piano school. This sparked the beginning of a lifelong love affair with music.
Jay’s piano teacher was very strict. But Jay never complained. Other kids spent their free time playing. But Jay spent his free time feverishly practicing the piano.
During his second year of junior high school, Jay’s parents divorced. This was a difficult time for Jay. He didn’t spend much time with other children. Playing the piano was his way to relax.
As he matured, Jay’s playing became more expressive. He had a natural ability for improvisation. He could take any piece of music and add his own style to it. He even began writing his own songs for female classmates that he liked. They began to take an active interest in his music.
In 1997, a classmate secretly signed Jay up to perform on the popular TV show Chao Ji Xin Ren Wang(超级新人王). Jay was surprised when he received a phone call from the show’s staff. He agreed to play the piano while a friend sang.
Their performance, however, was nothing to write home about. Jackie Wu, the show’s host and owner of Alfa Music, was unimpressed until he saw Jay’s musical score. The piece was complex, and Jay played it well. Wu decided to offer Jay a job at Alfa Music. Jay jumped at the chance.
At Alfa Music, Jay became a songwriter. He had little hope that he would ever become a performer himself. He was still socially awkward, and he wasn’t considered handsome enough to be a pop star.
But one day Jay performed his song “Lovable Woman”(可爱女人) for Alfa Music executive J.R Yang. Yang liked what he heard and agreed to let Jay record his own album. Jay released his first album, Jay, in November of 2000. It sold well, and fans and critics raved about it.
Jay’s first album combined R&B and hip-hop melodies with a distinct Chinese flavor. His unique style quickly took him to the top of the music charts. Three years and four albums later, Jay is still on top. He’s gained fans all over Asia. And he’s won countless awards.
Jay’s shyness hasn’t hindered his success at all. In fact his fans find this quality endearing. Besides, Jay understands what really keeps his fans listening. According to Jay, it’s all about the music.
